Dr. Robert Mockler
Joseph F. Adams Professor of Management

Dr. Robert J. Mockler is the Joseph F. Adams Professor of Management at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business. He received a BA and MBA from Harvard (1954, 1959) and PhD from Columbia (1961). His Columbia degree is in English literature, with a specialty in Elizabethan Drama, which accounts for his cross-disciplinary interests in applications of general management approaches to management of the arts, especially the dramatic ones. He is the Director of the Strategic Management Research Group and its Centers of Knowledge Based Systems for Business (one of the largest databases of prototype expert systems for management decision making in the United States), Case Study Development and Use Program (the third largest case study development program in the United States), Cross-Cultural Management and the Business of the Arts Institute.

He has authored, co-authored, or edited over 60 books and monographs, some 230 case studies, over 70 articles, over 50 book chapters, and over 200 presentations covering such areas as strategic management, case study development and use, competitive market analysis, new venture management, multinational planning, business ethics, management decision making, modeling of cognitive and behavioral management processes, contingency theory, business process re-engineering, computer information systems, group decision support systems for management, expert knowledge-based systems, and innovative teaching. His latest cross-disciplinary specialty is using drama and theater techniques to teach and do management, as well as management of enterprises. He has also studied Business Ethics in drama.

His first articles on strategic management and situational decision theory were published in Harvard Business Review in 1970 and 1971. His first book on strategic management was published in 1969 (Prentice-Hall). His books include three on expert systems and computer information systems development in 1992 (Macmillan), five on strategic management information systems, and case study development and use in 1993 and 1994 (Addison Wesley, Simon and Schuster, The Planning Forum); and four on multinational strategic management in 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2003 (John Wiley and Sons, Quorum Books, Haworth Press, and Strategic Management Research Group Publishing).

Three of his books have been translated into Chinese and published in China, two into Romanian and published in Romania, one into Greek and published in Greece, and one into Russian and published in Russia. He has lectured, consulted and taught worldwide in: China: Xian, Beijing, and Shanghai; Russia: Moscow, St. Petersburg; Finland; Japan; England; Poland; Germany; Brazil; Argentina; Costa Rica; Ireland; Italy; Taiwan; Philippines; India; Egypt; Mexico; Canada; and Romania, received national awards for innovative teaching (Decision Sciences Institute), been a Fulbright Scholar, and taught MBA courses in Rome, Milan, Latin America, and Beijing, and won numerous other awards for his work. He has also successfully started, run, and eventually sold his own multi-million dollar business ventures. He has developed and published over 120 presentations, case studies, and articles with other faculty at St. John's University. In addition, over 60 joint publications have been done with Professors of other domestic and overseas universities. He has taught research methodology at the DSI doctoral consortium for the past decade.
