St. John’s University Office of Postgraduate Professional Development Presents: Bullying from the Schoolyard to the Boardroom and the Bedroom

St. John’s University’s Office of Postgraduate Professional Development will host a conference on Bullying on Friday, April 16, 2010 from 10 a.m.– 3 p.m. in Donovan Community Room on its Queens campus. Co-sponsored by New York State Psychological Association-Clinical Division, Iona College, Coalition Against Child Abuse- Nassau County, Coalition Against Domestic Violence-Nassau County, Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), the lectures will be given by professionals in the fields of psychology, domestic violence, child abuse and professional development.

The following is a list of topics and invited speakers:

Key Note Speaker: Joel Haber, Ph.D.
Bullying is all about power! Bullying happens in schools, sports, camps and the workplace. Bullying is no longer about the common type of bullying we all know: physical bullying. It now involves the subtle types of relational aggression and the new cyber-bullying nightmare that has created havoc amongst parents and schools. The facts, dynamics and the things you need to know to tackle the bullying problem will be part of this presentation.

Bullying in Elementary through Junior High School Years
Presenter: Richard J. DioGuardi, Ph.D: This presentation will examine the characteristics of bullies and victims, types of bullying behavior, antecedents and consequences of bullying, and implications for practice.  Additionally, a brief review of interventions for victims and bullies will be presented.

Workplace Harassment: Impact, Assessment and Change
Presenter: Raymond J. Havlicek, Ph.D: Work place discrimination tops the list of psychosocial stressors people endure.  The impact upon persons experiencing work place discrimination emotional health, financial stability, careers, and marital, family and social well being are extensive, long lasting and injurious to mental and physical health.

Cyber Bullying- The High School Years
Presenter: Patricia Cathers,  LMSW:
The Internet has taken a central role in teenage culture, creating a new landscape for social interaction.  While most cyber communication is positive, an increasing number of teens are using technology to harass and bully peers. It is possible that the harm caused by cyber bullying may be even greater than the harm caused by offline bullying.

Working with Domestic Violence Clients
Presenter: Mindy Perlmutter, LCSW:
The presentation will focus on defining Domestic Violence and types of abuse, myths, and the cycle of violence.  We will then delve further into how to screen for domestic violence, factors aiding and delaying recovery, concerns for specific populations, effects of domestic violence on children and safety planning.
