Domenico Ferraro has been a part of the St. John’s
Rome Campus team since the spring of 2008. As the Coordinator of
Student Life for the campus, Domenico is in charge of helping
students to feel at home in the heart of Rome, planning activities
and excursions throughout the semester and ensuring that every
student who spends time on the Rome campus leaves with memories
that will last a lifetime.
Domenico is a native of Calabria, a beautiful
region in the south of Italy, “right at the end of the boot,” as
Domenico puts it. He moved to Rome in 2002 to study modern
literature and humanities at the Università la Sapienza di Roma,
and began working at St. John’s shortly after graduating. Staying
in Rome was ideal for him, since he’s still in awe of the city’s
ancient charms. In fact, one of his favorite ways to spend time in
Rome is to walk through the city’s streets and listen to the “voice
of history” all around him.
Although he says it took some time to adjust to the
traditions and culture of an American university, he soon fell in
love with his job, and still gets excited every time a new group of
students arrives on campus. And one of Domenico’s favorite thing
about his job is the opportunities it gives him to do so many other
things that he loves. He’s an avid fan of both watching and playing
soccer (he schedules a weekly game with students and often goes to
see games at the Stadio Olimpico), he loves to travel, and he
encourages everyone traveling for the first time to take in the
everyday experiences that make up their time abroad: “Take a bike
ride through the streets of Rome, have an espresso at an outdoor
café, just sit back and enjoy your surroundings!”
