Studying abroad is an incredible learning experience for your
son/daughter; however, we realize that saying bon voyage to a
child can be stressful for a parent. Familiarizing yourself
with the basic facts of your student's program before he/she
departs makes for a smoother transition once the program
begins.
What does the program fee
cover?
Home Away From Home: Comfortable and safe
housing accommodations are provided during all Global Studies
programs. Students travelling to
Rome, Italy and
Paris, France stay at St. John's University's campuses in those
locations. Students participating in our Discover the
World program stay at these campuses, in addition
to our partner school in
Seville, Spain. The facilities at all three of these locations
allow for students to have a safe and centrally-located home away
from home. The Office of Global Studies arranges safe
accommodations for students participating in short-term programs
and exchange programs, as well. These accommodations may include
hotels, apartments or dormitories. Please see Programs
for more details about your student's accommodations.
Accommodations: Students live in dorm-style
housing during our semester programs in single, double or triple
occupancy. Some dormitories have private bathrooms in each room,
while others have gender-specific communal bathrooms on each
floor. Students can access free wireless internet
throughout the buildings. For more details about our campuses
abroad, go to
Our Campuses.
Security: The safety
of our students is a top priority to St. John's
University. All destinations are considered travel-safe by the
Department of State. Just like on our New York campuses, our
campuses abroad have 24-hour security to ensure that students
can live and learn in a safe environment. To learn more,
please go to Safety.
Linens: St. John's
University provides sheets, blankets, pillows and
towels for students participating in one of our semester
programs. We realize that it is difficult to travel light when
packing for months at a time, so we help to "lighten the
load" with these provisions. We also provide cleaning
services for the linens every two and a half
weeks. Students are welcome to clean their
linens more often or to bring extras if
they choose.
Electronics: Foreign outlets are usually
different than American outlets, so students may need adapters
while they are abroad. The voltage can also be different,
so certain appliances will need converters, as well. However, it is
sometimes safer and more convenient to purchase appliances, like
hair dryers which produce heat, once the students arrive in their
destination.
Meal Plans: For most semester programs, St.
John's provides two meals per day, four days per week. This allows
students to be flexible with their weekend travel plans without
feeling tied down to a dining schedule. It also allows
students to enjoy meals off-campus and experience the food culture
of the cities they are exploring. In addition, there are fully
functional kitchens and grocery stores near our campuses for
students who prefer to cook their own meals. Students should set
aside spending money for meals on non-class days. Students
participating in short-term programs or exchange programs
should contact us
to find out about meal plan options specific to their
program.
On-site Administration: St. John's University
provides bilingual, on-site staff for our semester programs in
Rome, Paris and Seville. These administrators are important
resources for students studying abroad, guiding them in their
transition, facilitating cultural experiences and assisting with
day-to-day activities on campus. These administrators are also
available to help students who are struggling with
homesickness and/or other issues that may arise. Feel
free to get to know our staff better:
