One of the Largest Countries in the
World
From the visual arts to the philosophical treatises of
Confucius, Chinese history and culture have had a profound impact
on Western art, literature and technology. Today, China continues
to wield enormous influence as a rising economic and industrial
power. China has enthralled visitors for more than 5,000 years.
Now, through St. John’s, you can spend five weeks studying Chinese
language and culture at Suzhou (Soochow) University, founded in
1900. Suzhou – a vital economic and cultural center south of
Beijing – will become your home.
There you will visit and interact with local universities,
businesses, churches, factories, villages, markets and temples.
Planned trips include excursions to Beijing, the epicenter of
Chinese art and culture and Hangzhou, one of China’s most
prosperous regions, known for its natural beauty. Above all, you’ll
be able to engage the people of China. This program is part of a
degree certification in Chinese Studies from the Institute of Asian
Studies at St. John’s. If you wish, you may earn this 12- credit
certificate degree simply by completing another six credits in
Chinese culture during Summer Session II.
