All members of the St. John's University
community are eligible to borrow circulating materials. A valid St.
John's University ID (StormCard) or
St. John's University Library Courtesy Card serves as a library
card. Borrowers must present their card with the items they
wish to borrow. Borrowers are prohibited from lending their library
card (StormCard/Courtesy Card) to others. Any card that is
presented by someone other than the person to whom it was issued
will be confiscated and held at the Public Safety Office. Borrowers
are responsible for maintaining current contact information
with the Circulation Department.
Lost Cards
Report lost cards immediately to Public Safety at 718-990-6281 and
to the Circulation Department at 718-990-6850 to prevent
unauthorized use. Borrowers are responsible for material checked
out on their card prior to the time the library is notified.

The St. John's University Libraries correspond with patrons using
their email address. The following reminders are sent by e-mail to
every patron with a valid e-mail address. No paper notices
are sent.
- 1 day after the due date, an overdue notice is sent to all
borrowers
- 30 days after the due date, a second overdue notice is sent to
undergraduate students, graduate students, and courtesy card
holders
To select additional options for e-mail notifications log in to
your
online account, then select additional options in the ‘My
Messaging’ section.
A transcript/registration hold is placed on a library
account when material is 30 days overdue. Overdue items must
be returned and replacement fees and/or overdue fines paid before
additional items may be borrowed and the hold removed.
Overdue notices are issued as a
courtesy, however, non-receipt of an overdue notice does not exempt
a borrower from applicable fines. To avoid overdue fines, please
return or renew your materials before the due date. Be sure to
check you
account online to monitor your due dates rather than relying on
notices exclusively.
Fines &
Fees
- Overdue fines accrue at a rate of 20 cents/day to
a maximum of $5 per book.
- Overdue reserve and media material accrue fines at
a higher rate.
- A transcript/registration hold is placed on the
borrower's account when a book is 30 days
overdue.
- A transcript/registration hold is placed on
reserve and media material 1 day after the due
date.
- After 30 days overdue, an item is considered lost
and a replacement fee is charged.
- Grace Period: All patrons are extended the
courtesy of a 3 day grace period (beyond the due date) for
overdue items, except reserve and media
material.
- The borrower is responsible for notifying the
library immediately if library material is damaged or
lost.
Lack of knowledge of loan policies, failure to note due dates,
and failure to renew on time are not acceptable reasons for waiving
fines and fees. Contact the Circulation Department iwth any
questions.
Holds
Users may request a circulating item which has been borrowed by
another patron by placing a holdonline through the
Libraries' Catalog or in person at the Circulation Desk. A hold
does not truncate the original loan period. When the item is returned, the library will hold
it at the Circulation Desk for 7 days and notify the patron
that it is available for pick up.
Searches for Missing
Items
If a circulating item cannot be located on the shelf and is not
currently on loan to a nother patron, a seach may be requested at
the Circulation Desk. Items will be searched and if located, the
patron will be notified. If the item is not found, library staff
will continue to search on a regular basis and evaluate whether to
replace the lost item. It is the responsibility of the patron to
check with the library regarding the staus of requested
searches.
