Staten Island Campus of St. John’s Launches Cost-Cutting, Three-Year Option for New Freshmen

November 11, 2010

True to its focus on excellence, affordability and service, St. John’s University will launch a cost-cutting, accelerated program at its Staten Island campus next fall allowing new, eligible students to save money while earning their bachelor’s degree in three years.

Open to students who apply for the Fall 2011 freshman class at St. John’s Staten Island campus, this is the only accelerated, three-year undergraduate degree option at any New York City college or university. St. John’s also will continue to offer its full range of four-year degree programs at Staten Island.

Students who enroll in the three-year program can save as much as $29,000 by graduating a year earlier. And at a time when the job market is more competitive than ever, the program also benefits students who want to apply their education toward entering the work force a year early.

“This is an outstanding opportunity in every sense — and the only opportunity of this kind in New York City,” said Jerrold Ross, Ph.D., Dean and Academic Vice President of the Staten Island Campus. “The program is challenging and rewarding. It integrates traditional liberal arts courses with individual disciplines and an emphasis on serving those in need, here and abroad.”

The intensive course of study combines a challenging curriculum with personal advisement and leadership-building service activities, available locally and internationally through summer study abroad courses. St. John’s will reorganize its financial aid to ensure that all students in the program benefit from these study abroad opportunities.

Students interested in the program can complete their undergraduate application online, indicating their desire to enroll at the Staten Island campus. They also will be required to complete a short essay expressing the reasons for their interest.

The three-year, accelerated option will be available in 14 majors: Bachelor of Arts: English, Government and Politics, Psychology, Speech Pathology; Bachelor of Science: Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Mass Communications, Sport Management; Bachelor of Science in Education: Adolescent Education, Childhood Education; Bachelor of Science in Business: Finance, Management, Marketing.

The first class admitted to the program this fall will move through their three years together, allowing them to share experiences and support from each other and faculty advisors. On-campus housing is available.

“The Staten Island campus of St. John’s is the ideal location for a program that features personal advisement,” said Christopher Cuccia, Ed.D., Academic Assistant Vice President at the Staten Island Campus. “This is a close-knit academic community, in which students, faculty and administrators communicate easily and often. It’s the perfect place for a program that features academic excellence within a supportive campus environment.”

The residential, 16.5-acre Staten Island campus of St. John’s University is located in the Grymes Hill section of the borough. It is one of the University’s three New York City campuses, including the 96.5-acre Queens campus and the 10-story vertical campus in Manhattan. St. John’s also has campuses in Oakdale, NY, and Rome, Italy, as well as a location in Paris, France.
