Queens, NY - The St. John’s University men’s soccer team will
host the St. John’s Nike Cup this weekend, with four of the top
Division I programs playing at Belson Stadium.
The tournament kicks off on Friday at 6 p.m., with 10th ranked
St. Louis playing Colonial Athletic Association member George
Mason. The second game of the night, at approximately 8 p.m.,
will pit No. 23 Seton Hall against the seventh-ranked Red
Storm.
On Saturday, September 18, the Red Storm will host St. Louis at
8 p.m. George Mason will play at Seton Hall on Saturday at 3
p.m.
St. John’s enters the weekend with a 2-1-1 overall record and a
1-0-0 mark in the BIG EAST. The preseason favorite to win the
league title, the Red Storm are off to a strong start this
season.
The team has been led by seniors Matt Groenwald (Mt. Prospect,
IL) and Andre Schmid (Sacramento, CA). Groenwald, who was
named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, is second on the team
in scoring with one goal and three assists for five points. Schmid,
who was named BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday,
leads the team with two goals and two assists for six points.
St. Louis, led by sophomore MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Will
John, enters the weekend with a 3-1-0 overall record. John,
who was named Conference-USA Player of the Week for the second time
this season on Monday, has six goals and has scored 13 points.
Seton Hall is 3-1-0 overall and will be playing its BIG EAST
opener on Friday against the Red Storm. The Pirates, who beat
St. John’s, 4-2 last year, are led by senior Mark Pedreiras, who
has a league-best four goals, and sophomore Sacha Kljestan, who has
four assists.
George Mason, 2-2-0 overall, is coming off of a 3-0 win over
Robert Morris on Sunday in the GMU Classic. The Patriots, who
dropped a 1-0 decision last weekend to nationally-ranked Santa
Clara, are led by junior forward Teba McKnight, who has two goals
and one assist for five points.
