St. John’s University Vincentian Center for Church and Society
is sponsoring the “Beyond Accommodation: Embracing Persons with
Disabilities” conference on October 16 at the University’s D’Angelo
Center on its Queens campus.
Mark K. Shriver, Senior Vice President of Save
the Children’s U.S. Programs, will serve as the keynote
speaker.
The conference will focus on the personal and
societal transformation needed to move beyond mere accommodation of
persons with disabilities to embracing them in their complete
personhood. Participants will gain a greater appreciation of
persons with disabilities and recognize that more than structures
need to be changed to fully include these individuals in
society.

This conference will feature several panels
including: “Stories of Resilience” – persons with disabilities and
caregivers will share their perspectives of societal responses to
their talents and their needs; a panel that features best practices
in services; and a student panel, highlighting experiences St.
John’s students have had in various capacities with person with
disabilities. The concluding panel will feature St. John’s faculty
who will discuss what the University can do as a Catholic and
Vincentian University to “embrace” persons with disabilities.
Shriver’s Save the Children’s U.S. Programs
work to ensure a fair start for all kids in the United States,
including the one in five living in poverty. His career fighting
for social justice in advocacy and service organizations, as well
as elective office, has focused on advancing the right of every kid
in America to have a safe and vibrant childhood.
