Distance Learning Pedagogy 2 is an optional six-week online
course covering topics and materials that builds upon the teaching
techniques covered in Pedagogy 1. The course content deals with
pedagogical methods of engaging your students in your online course
and empowering them to be self-sufficient.
It begins Monday, March 15, 2010, and will run through Friday,
April 23, 2010. This course is conducted entirely online and
requires approximately three hours per week of online
participation. Thus the dates and times you want to log in and
participate each week are up to you. Successful course completion
and working with a DL mentor to demonstrate the use with your
students in a totally online class of the techniques learned in the
course, qualifies faculty members for a one-time stipend of $500,
which began in Spring 09. Those who have previously taken Pedagogy
2 can retroactively earn the stipend by mailing for complete
details to: chasene@stjohns.edu, with the name of the course and
they want to use for this purpose. There is a cap of 20 who can be
mentored simultaneously; others will be placed on a priority
list.
Please note that class size is limited, therefore selection will be
based on curricular needs of the distance learning program, level
of commitment and date of registration for the class. Completion of
Distance Learning Pedagogy 1 is required to participate in this
course. At successful conclusion of this course you will receive a
certificate of completion. Topics include:
- Course design and navigation, including time management
strategies to lighten your workload
- Methods of presenting interactive course content to your
students
- Facilitating and enhancing the use of the boards to promote
student participation, enabling them to be less dependent on you to
keep discussions alive
- Methods of creating podcasts, video presentations, blogs, RSS
feeds and wikis
- Methods of presenting content for slower vs. faster connection
speeds at either beginner or advanced technical levels
