ENG 1024: Short Novel in World Literature

Course Description

This course is designed to acquaint the student with the short novel and to develop an appreciation for this form.

Additional Notes
Please note there will be 2 REQUIRED chat sessions a week, probably on Sunday and Wednesday evenings (7:00 or 8:00 p.m.). Chats last between 60 to 90 minutes per session. They represent 20% of the grade for the course. Attendance at these chats are required of all students.

Upon registering for this course, students must email the instructor from the email address you plan to use for participating in this course. Also, if you are a student from the St. John's Staten Island campus, please inform the instructor so he can order books for you to purchase from the Staten Island campus book store.

  • Stephen Crane, The Open Boat and Other Stories (incl. "Maggie, Girl of the Streets")
  • Herman Melville, Bartleby and Benito Cereno.
