Course Description
This course fulfills the world history requirements for the St. John's University university-wide core curriculum. We will study the forces and events that have shaped the modern world from the Age of Explorations to the present. Among the topics we will study in detail are the world-wide dissemination of scientific, technological and industrial revolutions, the development of world religions, democracy and internationalism, the growth of nationalism, imperialism, and colonialism, the impact of Western domination on non-Western societies, wars and revolutions of the modern world, decolonization, and globalization as a historical development. We will approach these topics through some of the basic themes that inform historical thinking: the growth and development of political and economic systems, the exchange of trade and ideas, the social and gender structures of societies, the spread and influence of religions, the importance of high culture and popular culture, the role of individuals, the impact of science and technology, environmental changes, and the impact of human migration.
