NYC DYCD Grant Recognition
This past fall the academic program of Dr. Camacho-Gingerich’s NYC
Department of Youth and Community Development three-year grant in
Adult Literacy was rated “Excellent” by the agency that funded her
program. This grant
was renewed in April 2012 for one additional year, 2012-2013. This program is fully in
keeping with St. John’s University’s Vincentian Mission. The Adult Literacy program
consists of free GED and basic education classes, including
English, math, and computer classes, to benefit the educational and
economic disadvantaged of all ethnic groups in several of our
communities. In
addition, these adult students benefit from a series of
multidisciplinary workshops conducted by selected St. John’s
University’s scholars. Textbooks are also provided free of charge.
Our St. John’s University students serve as volunteers in these
classes. Many serve their internship requirements here, and praise
their experiences as “educationally, professionally, and personally
very valuable and enriching.” For additional information on these
classes and workshops
