Barbara Winslow, “Be a Catalyst for Change: Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Shirley Chisholm's historic (and audacious) bid for the Democratic presidential nomination”.

The year 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of Shirley Chisholm's campaign to win the Democratic Party nomination for the presidency of the United States. Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress was an outspoken feminist, anti racist, champion of public education and health care. Winslow will not only talk about Chisholm's record of social justice activism, but how the creation of the Shirley Chisholm Project of Brooklyn Women's Activism is bringing back Chisholm's legacy for the next generation.

Dr. Winslow is the author of Sylvia Pankhurst: Sexual Politics and Political Activism, St. Martin’s Press, N.Y. 1996 and Clio in the Classroom: A Guide for Teaching U.S. Women’s History, co-authored and co-edited with Carol Berkin and Margaret Crocco. Winslow is also the founder and project director of the Shirley Chisholm Project of Brooklyn Women’s Activism.
