The School of Education Hosts Educational Forum on Issues for Today’s Teenagers

October 05, 2009

Reaching out to the local community in Staten Island, NY, St. John’s School of Education and 31 I.D.E.A.L. (Information Dealing with Education and Learning), a parent, teacher and administrative group on Staten Island, hosted a forum on key issues facing teenagers including alcohol and drug dependency; abusive relationships; eating disorders; and self-mutilation.  On Thursday, October 1, approximately 60 people from the University community and local schools attended the forum to learn about the warning signs of these issues and find support.

Members of The School of Education’s Dean’s Scholars and Kappa Delta Pi facilitated the forum by splitting the audience into individual workshops on the issues of alcohol and drug dependency; abusive relationships; eating disorders; and self-mutilation.  Workshop leaders included Dr. Janice Gross, a social worker; Christopher Paige, Director of Outpatient Services for Camelot of Staten Island; Christian Burgess, Director of School Programs for Safe Horizon; and Dr. Joyce Wendell, who spoke on the topic of self-mutilation.  Guest speakers included Dina Tush, a mother whose daughter, Jessica Tush, was killed by her boyfriend 18 months ago in New Jersey.
