How can we help students rethink the assumptions they bring to
class? How can we help them build their critical thinking skills so
that they can learn the logic of our disci-plines and become
engaged learners? Jonathan Fowler and Phyllis Conn will share their
experience following the guidelines suggested by Ken Bain (What the
Best College Teachers Do) to build student curiosity; clarify new
information; help students apply and synthesize; and respond to
students’ work. Workshop participants will be encour-aged to
consider how they can apply Bain’s principles (such as finding a
“beautiful question”) in their own courses.
