The symposium provides an excellent opportunity for
undergraduate chemistry students in the NY metropolitan area to
present the results of their research. The program includes a
keynote address, presentation of student papers (15 minutes each in
small groups), followed by a luncheon.
Date
Saturday, April 29th
Time
8:30 am – 2:00 pm
(breakfast and luncheon included)
Location
St. John's University
Keynote speaker
James F. Wishart, Brookhaven National
Laboratory
The highlight of this year's symposium is the Keynote
Address to be delivered by Dr. James F. Wishart of Brookhaven
National Laboratory. Dr. Wishart is the author of 67 refereed
scientific publications and co-editor of an ACS Advances in
Chemistry Series volume.
Keynote Address
The Keynote Address will be followed by original research
presentations given by students from colleges and universities
throughout the tri-state area.
“Ionic Liquids: Salt for the Earth”
James F. Wishart
Ionic liquids are a rapidly expanding family of condensed-phase
media with important applications in energy production, nuclear
fuel and waste processing, improving the efficiency and safety of
industrial chemical processes, and pollution prevention. Generally
speaking, ionic liquids are nonvolatile, noncombustible, highly
conductive, recyclable and capable of dissolving a wide variety of
materials. They are finding new uses in chemical synthesis,
catalysis, separations chemistry, electrochemistry and other areas.
We are interested in how ionic liquid properties influence physical
and dynamical processes that determine the stability and lifetimes
of reactive intermediates and thereby affect the courses of
chemical reactions and product distributions. The talk will
describe the unusual properties and applications of ionic liquids
and present some of our own results on their radiation-induced
chemistry. Dr. Wishart’s research is supported by the U. S.
Department of Energy.
