Only offered on the Staten Island campus, the B.A. in Social
Studies Education is intended for those students who wish to pursue
careers in secondary education, with a specialization in Social
Studies, and who will graduate after May 2003. (Students who
graduate by May 2003 may enroll in the regular B.A. program in
Social Studies and do their minor in Education under the old
rules.) The new program requirements are as follows:
Core Courses*, 60 credits
Major in Social Studies, 33 credits
U.S. History, 6 credits
European History, 6 credits
Non-Western History, 6 credits
History elective, 3 credits
Economics elective, 3 credits
Government elective, 3 credits
Sociology elective, 3 credits
Geography elective, 3 credits
Professional Courses required for NYS Certification including
Associate Teaching Experience, 36 credits
Minimum Total*, 129 credits
*For students who first enrolled at St. John's University in the
fall of 2001 or later.
