The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science provides
students with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of
theory along with the knowledge and skills to excel in the many job
opportunities available to today’s mathematicians.
It is the Department’s mission to fully explain what mathematics
actually entails through a thorough and structured examination of
its history, philosophy and applications. Students learn how math
encompasses the basic patterns that human beings find in — or
impose upon — their environments and the universe itself. The
Department’s curricula continue to combine the rigorous approach
initiated by Euclid with contemporary topics. This approach
challenges students’ curiosity, sparks their inventiveness and
leads them to the triumph of discovery.
While developing a sense of inquiry, students sharpen their
critical thinking skills. When they complete the program, many go
on for advanced study at leading graduate schools. They also are
well-prepared to work in fields such as actuarial science, computer
systems, the environment, financial analysis, teaching and urban
planning. These and other careers require an understanding of math,
applied probability, optimization, simulation, statistics and
related areas.
