What is “advanced standing?”
Advanced standing recognizes EMS
providers that are certified as NYS advanced emergency medical
technicians – critical care (AEMT-CC) and allows them to supplement
their knowledge and training by participating in a program that
will allow them to obtain NYS and National Registry certification
as a paramedic.
How do I get in the class?
'Advanced standing” students will
compete for seats in the EMSI’s paramedic original training
program. All candidates are required to take a written screening
exam that tests their EMT knowledge, reading comprehension and math
skills. If the candidate passes they will be called for an oral
interview with EMSI staff. All “advanced placement” candidates must
also provide EMSI with an official transcript from their original
AEMT-CC program and copies of all clinical and
ambulance evaluations.
What happens if I am accepted as an “advanced placement”
student?
If accepted into the program advanced
standing students will be given the opportunity to sit for an
interim examination prior to the beginning of each division that
the candidate has previously received training in from their
AEMT-CC original course. If the candidate scores an 85% or better
on the interim examination a learning contract will be generated
for that division advising the candidate what didactic sessions
they will be required to attend, if any, for that specific
division. All students must still attend and participate in all lab
sessions and skills evaluations. A clinical waiver may be granted
on an hour for hour basis by the course medical director after
review of the candidate’s clinical hours and student evaluations
from their original AEMT-CC program.
Experiential Learning: How does this benefit
me?
“Advanced placement” students will
not have to spend as much time in didactic classroom sessions or on
clinical rotations as paramedic original students will have to as
long as they score well on each division interim exam and can
document that they have the required amount of clinical hours with
above satisfactory evaluations
Can I skip skill sessions?
No, all students, original and
advanced placement are required to attend all skills labs and
skills evaluation sessions.
Is there a price difference for “advanced standing”
students?
No, the tuition and fees are the same
for all students
Is the length of the course different for “advanced
standing” students?
No, the student will be
registered for a complete program.
Will I be able to use any transfer credits?
No, the student will not be able to
use any transfer credits towards this class. This is a certificate
class only and there are no required credits to complete the
program.
What are the criteria for graduation?
