Committee for Latin American & Caribbean Studies Offers Free Adult Literacy Classes

February 02, 2010

St. John’s University’s Committee on Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) will continue to offer this semester free basic education (including English) and GED classes.  These classes are made possible thanks to a three year grant in Adult Literacy that Dr. Alina Camacho-Gingerich, Chair of CLACS and professor of Languages and Literatures received from the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (NYC DYCD).  Under this grant, all textbooks and materials will be offered to participants free of charge.

This program, in tune with St. John’s Vincentian mission, will assist adults of all ethnic backgrounds to become literate and obtain the necessary skills to secure employment, become self-sufficient, and pursue further education.  Individuals will be at least 16 years of age and not enrolled or required to be enrolled in secondary school under New York State law.  For additional information and registration please contact St. John’s University’s Committee on Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) at 718-990-5829 or by e-mail at clacs@stjohns.edu.
