About the Program

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology is designed to prepare clinical laboratory scientists who have the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform, analyze and evaluate patient lab data thus providing the physician with diagnostic information to assure quality patient care. The graduates will become successful leaders and moral and ethical professionals.

The program will prepare graduates to:

Demonstrate competency in math, biology, chemistry and knowledge of the profession of medical technology

  • Demonstrate acquisition of a science and mathematics knowledge base
  • Explain and apply the scientific method
  • Explain the origin of the medical technology profession: history, definition, scope of practice and explain the position of the medical technologist in the health care team

Demonstrate competency in the biomedical sciences

  • Describe and explain human anatomy and physiology
  • Explain the pathology of disease, the essential nature, the causes and the development of abnormal conditions
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of clinical chemistry

Illustrate and apply the ethical principles of a laboratory professional

  • Understand the professional obligations and responsibilities of a medical technologist in maintaining the high standards of this profession
  • Develop skill in performing all laboratory tests honestly and accurately and internalize the ethics of the profession
  • Recognize situations that might present potential ethical dilemmas (i.e., HIPAA)
  • Demonstrate personal responsibility for performance
  • Realize the moral obligation of effective performance

Communicate effectively both orally and in composition

  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally to convey ideas and information to individuals with diverse capabilities and interests (physicians, medical personnel, staff members and patients)
  • Write cohesively: organize material using consistently correct grammar and appropriate laboratory terminology

Satisfy the objectives of the professional/clinical year

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of tests and procedures and integrate theory and practice
  • Perform tasks in the clinical laboratory sections with precision and accuracy
  • Apply the basic theoretical knowledge of the complexities of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Assess the test results and analyze quality control

Demonstrate the fundamental competencies and application of skills of medical technology

  • Recognize problems and have the ability to combine knowledge and technical skills to solve them
  • Anticipate and develop new testing strategies when necessary
  • Broaden knowledge through the reading of professional journals and attendance at workshops and seminars
  • Anticipate and adapt to changes important to the profession
  • Demonstrate the ability to make use of the vast resources of materials available for professional enrichment
  • Demonstrate the willingness to be part of a professional team of care givers.
