Media and Communication Arts Complex
To complement the efforts of its award-winning faculty, St. John's provides a television, radio and computer graphics complex designed according to the standards of major broadcast facilities. The complex houses a broadcast-quality Television Center featuring a 700-square-foot studio with multiple high-resolution cameras, computerized lighting, multi-channel audio recorders, digital video effects generators and two- and three-dimensional computer modeling with animation capabilities.

Students edit their video programs under faculty guidance using a computerized editing system, which records to three-quarter inch VHS or MiniDV videotape formats. Laboratory assignments are performed on seven video editing stations. On-location production is facilitated through portable packages recording to BetaCam or MiniDV.

Communication Arts students of the College of Professional Studies, along with students enrolled in the University’s Fine Arts programs, can now access the latest in computer graphic, desktop video and publishing technology. The laboratory and classroom feature hardware and software from industry leaders such as Macintosh, IBM, Hewlett Packard and NewTek. The presentation software library is kept current with recent releases from Adobe (Illustrator, PhotoShop and Premiere), Aldus (Freehand, SuperPaint and Pagemaker), Macromedia and Quark XPress.

Work areas for the co-curricular organizations in television, radio and film are set aside so that students and faculty can collaborate on a full range of projects for internal and external use. In fact, the University's Television Club, WRED-TV, creates a weekly program for cable distribution in Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Long Island and Westchester County. The student-run campus radio station, WSJU, is also part of the media complex, and includes the same up-to-date, sophisticated equipment found in professional broadcast environments.
