About the Program

The Mission of the Minor Area of Concentration in Business Administration, offered by the Division of Administration and Economics of the College of Professional Studies, is to provide an excellent education in several selected disciplines of business administration, namely Accounting, Management, Business Law, Marketing, and Finance, to specific groups of baccalaureate degree students.  These students are pursuing Professional Studies majors within the College of Professional Studies and choose, or in some instances*, are required to complete proscribed courses in business administration as part of their programs of study.  Courses are taught with this orientation to Professional Studies in mind so that wherever possible, examples and applications are used during classes which are specific to the Professional Studies majors.

The program will prepare graduates to:

Goal I. Apply fundamental concepts of Accounting.
1.1 Identify or describe the characteristics of the various types of business organizations and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
1.2 Identify assets, liabilities and the other components of the accounting matrix.
1.3 Evaluate and record common business transactions.
1.4 Explain how to formulate an income statement, a statement of Owner’s Equity or Retained Earnings, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
1.5 Interpret information on the various Financial Statements.
1.6 Demonstrate how financial statements and other accounting information aid in the decision making process.

Goal II. Apply fundamental concepts of Business Law
2.1 Identify the types and sources of law in the American legal system.
2.2 Describe the elements of a valid contract.
2.3 Distinguish between civil law and criminal law.
2.4 Distinguish between implied and express contracts.
2.5 Explain intentional torts and negligence and strict liability.
2.6 Distinguish between bilateral and unilateral contracts.
2.7 Explain the importance of the law, courts and regulation to business in society

Goals III. Apply fundamental concepts of Economics
3.1 Describe the functioning of the markets using current examples, such as changing technologies and their impact on the employment situation.
3.2 Evaluate controversial policies such as minimum wage to show the importance of the public sector and its relevance to issues of poverty.
3.3 Interpret the theoretical models of pure competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly, by identifying industries associated with market structure.
3.4 Differentiate between fiscal policy and monetary policy.
3.5 Explain the difference between classical theory, Keynesian theory, monetarism, and their place in mainstream economics.

Goal IV. Apply fundamental concepts of Management
4.1 Describe the management functions.
4.2 Classify the different levels of management.
4.3 Distinguish between various strategies in strategic planning.
4.4 Create examples of organizational change and innovation.
4.5 Explain individual behavior in organizations.
4.6 Distinguish strengths and weaknesses of organizations in planning.
4.7 Explain types of organizations and various areas of business, including risk and insurance, real estate and banking.

Goal V. Demonstrate the ability to apply fundamental concepts of Marketing
5.1 Interpret and discuss marketing’s impact on society and the marketing mix used by the marketing firms.
5.2 Describe strategic marketing and its role in strategic planning.
5.3 Classify consumer and organizational buying behavior.
5.4 Distinguish between branding and packaging.
5.5 Create examples of developing and managing products.
5.6 Explain the legal and ethical issues involved in marketing.
5.7 Interpret consumer behavior.

Goal VI. Demonstrate skills critical to success in business
6.1 Communicate effectively in business, both orally and in writing.
6.2 Demonstrate analytical and critical thinking skills by applying accounting, business law, economics, management and marketing information to decision making using real world examples.
6.3 Work effectively with people both individually and in groups/teams.
