The Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications offers
students the greatest possible flexibility in media studies.
Students explore a broad range of media, but also concentrate in
advertising, film, journalism, public relations, publishing, radio,
and television or television production.
The program will prepare graduates
to:
Demonstrate knowledge of the basic
theories of mass communications.
- Identify, analyze and interpret basic theories of mass
communications.
- Apply basic theories of mass communications to specific media
through the written and oral word.
Demonstrate knowledge of the operations of
mass media.
- Compare and contrast the role, functions, and operation of each
medium of mass communication studied, placing each in historical
context.
- Illustrate, analyze and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses
of each of the mass media.
- Outline and assess the guidelines – legal, ethical and
financial – that regulate the various mass communications
media.
Demonstrate knowledge of the business
practices of the various mass media.
- Explain, from historical and contemporary perspectives, how
emerging technologies influence the business of various media and
the various media businesses.
- Explain the relationship between the creative and business
sides of the various mass media.
Demonstrate knowledge of the uses and
gratifications of mass media.
- Describe and explain the different ways in which individuals
and audiences make use of the media and present the information
orally and in writing.
- Describe and explain how the media affect our attitudes,
beliefs and behaviors and present the information orally and in
writing.
- Formulate examples that demonstrate the ways in which audience
attitudes, beliefs and behaviors affect media content and
operations and present the information orally and in writing
