Description of Awards

Alpha Phi Sigma- Alpha Epsilon Rho Chapter- National Criminal Justice Honor Society, chapter recognizes outstanding students majoring in Criminal Justice who have a 3.2 overall index for all previous course work (including transfer credits) and a 3.2 in the Criminal Justice major.

The College of Professional Studies Honor Society was founded by the Faculty Council over 30 years ago in order to recognize College of Professional Studies students who are outstanding both in academics and in volunteer service. Membership is open to College of Professional Studies students who have attained a cumulative average of 3.5 or higher.

The Marianne Noonan Award, named after a former student in the Sport Management Program, recognizes academic performance and outstanding contributions to the program.

The Looseleaf Law Publications Award is granted to students who have shown outstanding dedication and enthusiasm in attaining their Criminal Justice or Legal Studies degree.

The Bessie and Isidor Shapiro Memorial Award recognizes a member of the graduating class of the College of Professional Studies majoring in Criminal Justice or Legal Studies who has demonstrated character, scholarship and a strong work ethic.

The Panayiotis Papadopoulos Award is sponsored by Professor Louis Gesualdi to recognize a graduating senior who has demonstrated extraordinary humanitarian qualities.

The Franklin Camerano Award for Excellence in Health Services Administration sponsored by Professor Franklin Camerano, recognizes a student in the Health Services program who has demonstrated academic excellence.

The Francis Flynn Award for Excellence in Mathematics recognizes a Computer Science major who has completed the greatest number of high level mathematics courses in the graduating class with the highest index.

The P. Kevin Castel Award is presented to the student most likely to succeed in the study of law.

The Delmar Publishing Legal Studies Award recognizes graduating Legal Studies majors who have demonstrated academic excellence.

The National Law Enforcement Scholarship Award recognizes a Criminal Justice major/minor who has demonstrated scholarship, character, integrity and motivation.

The Craig Collins Award recognizes a graduating Criminal Justice major who has attained an exemplary grade point index and has demonstrated excellence in the field of Criminal Justice.

The 2007-2008 St. John’s Mock Trial Team competed in the National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament for the 16th year.  St. John’s was the host school for the Atlantic Regional in February and the team finished in third place, earning a bid to the National Tournament for the 14th time in 16 years.  The Nationals took place in March in Tucson, AZ and St. John’s placed eighth out of 26 teams.
 
The Michelle Doherty Award is given to the female who is graduating with the highest major GPA in the Sport Management program.

The Gold Keys, Silver Keys and Certificates of Achievement recognize students in each major who have attained the first, second and third highest cumulative indices in the graduating class.

The Judge Lawrence J. Finnegan, Jr. Award, named in honor of the late Lawrence J. Finnegan, Jr., recognizes a graduating Criminal Justice major who has a deep enthusiastic interest in improving the American Criminal Justice system.
 
The Dorothy Day Award is presented to the student who has demonstrated leadership, service and academic excellence in human services.

The Certificate for Excellence in Public Speaking is awarded to the student nominated by the speech faculty as most outstanding in speech course work this year.

The Outstanding Journalism Graduate Award recognizes a graduating journalism major who has contributed to the journalism profession both inside and outside the classroom and has achieved an exemplary grade point index.

The William A. Trunkes Memorial Scholarship Fund is donated by Judge Thomas T. Trunkes, a graduate of St. John’s University and its School of Law, in honor of his uncle William A. Trunkes. The scholarship is awarded to a New York City police officer or his or her child who is pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and who preferably lives in Brooklyn.

Alpha Sigma Lambda, “First in Scholarship and Leadership,” is an honor society which partners with colleges and universities to celebrate the scholarship and leadership of adult students in higher education. The society’s aim is to recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work. Candidates must be at least 25 years of age and registered as evening, weekend or part-time students for a significant part of their undergraduate studies. For membership, students must rank in the top 10 percent of eligible candidates with a minimum GPA of 3.3.

The Division of Humanities Award for Excellence: Writing in Philosophy or Theology recognizes a student in the College of Professional Studies who exhibits excellence in writing and critical thinking in an essay for a philosophy or theology course.

Francine Boehrer Award for Extraordinary Service honors a member of the College of Professional Studies Honor Society for their extraordinary service.

The Annual Dean’s Award of the Collge of Professional Studies is presented to a graduate who demonstrates outstanding leadership, untiring efforts and commitment to the vision and goals of the College of Professional Studies.
