Sales Representative
Thompson Contract Inc.
During her senior year, Rose Akin completed her internship at
John Hancock Financial Services. There she was asked to focus on
the firm's marketing initiatives which included enhancement of
their website for recruiting and lead generation purposes.
Other marketing projects included: community market research
whereby Rose prepared a comprehensive portfolio of statistical
and demographical information on the town of Westbury, New
York.
She was also able to participate in and work on enhancing the
firm’s proprietary "Uncovering Your Markets" training course for
new associates.
"Completing this internship benefited me and helped me obtain
my current position as a Sales Representative. Further,
receiving my degree from such a prestigious school as St.
John’s, with a high GPA, helped me to get the interview with my
current employer.
My hard work in the marketing department at John Hancock
enhanced the company overall, namely their yearly sales, and
really helped get me the job I have today. My current employer was
convinced that I could multitask and was also impressed with John
Hancock's letter of recommendation.
My advice to any student interested in doing an internship is:
don’t narrow your internship search to “Big” firms alone. Just like
you, I thought that a well known company would look very good on my
resume. After completing an internship at a small agency, I have
realized that I was given the opportunity to actually work and
learn about business. Unlike interning at big corporate companies,
I was part of the team over at John Hancock and felt like an asset
to the company. I was proud of all the on-the-job-experience I was
able to list on my resume right out of school. Internships are a
must to stay competitive in the job search after
college."
