With economic uncertainty and natural disasters causing more
risk and loss for financial institutions and other corporate and
governmental entities, skilled actuaries are in strong demand.
Insurance companies — traditionally the sector's
largest group of employers — will continue to hire
professional actuaries with growth also coming from such employers
as financial and consulting firms. The Bureau of Labor Statistics
forecasts a 21 percent increase in the number of actuarial
positions by 2018.
You can prepare for these opportunities through the Bachelor of
Science in Actuarial Science at St. John’s University. Offered by
The Peter J. Tobin College of
Business, the 130-credit degree program provides students with
a broad business education as well as rigorous preparation for
passing required actuarial exams leading to certification by the
Society of Actuaries and the Casualty Actuarial Society.
Students learn how to use and apply such key actuarial tools as
risk, measuring, analyzing and pricing. They also are able to work
closely with an advisor and belong to an actuarial club, further
enhancing their certification exam preparation.
This multifaceted, professional program is fully accredited by
the prestigious Association to
Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB — International).
Fewer than 20 percent of collegiate business schools in the
U.S. and Canada have attained this accreditation.
Leveraging St. John's metropolitan location, students have
access to the University's longstanding relationships with leading
New York-area financial and insurance organizations as well as to
desirable paid internships and mentoring support from local alumni
— who are leading professionals in the field of risk
management.
