Student Organizations

Gamma Iota Sigma
Gamma Iota Sigma is the international collegiate professional fraternity for students pursuing careers in Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science. Our purpose is to promote, encourage and sustain student interest in these fields and to facilitate interaction of educational institutions and the industry by facilitating networking, research activities, scholarship and improved public relations. The Alpha Iota Chapter of St. John's University is one of 54 chartered in this international fraternity and stands as a well respected, successful member, and a leader among other schools. At the Annual Gamma Iota Sigma International Management Conference in 2010, Alpha Iota received 10 awards in recognition for outstanding all-around performance as a chapter.

Each semester at least three speaker events with leaders from the insurance industry are conducted. Recent speakers included the CEO of Everest Re, the President and CEO of Lockton Companies Inc. and various other vice presidents of leading insurance, reinsurance and brokerage companies like Munich Re America and Willis. Alumni and student social events are hosted twice per semester and students participate in various community service events such as “Relay for Life” hosted by the American Cancer Foundation, a yearly blood drive and other charitable walks hosted by organizations like the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

Students meeting selective criteria are invited to join Gamma Iota Sigma. Members are required to remain active and participate in the various speaker, community service and social events hosted by the executive board.  For information contact alphaiota.sju@gmail.com or Melodee Harper-Fields at harperm1@stjohns.edu or (212) 277-5119.

The Actuarial Club
The Actuarial Club of St. John’s University is a Manhattan Campus based organization run by students for the benefit of students.  The purpose of the club is to promote and sustain interest in the actuarial professions, and to provide resources and guidance in shaping the actuaries of the future.  The organization also serves as a channel to assist its members with any concerns or challenges they may encounter.  Guest speakers attend regularly to inform students of career opportunities and lecture on various topics relating to the industry, certification exams, etc.  Social activities are also part of the Actuarial Club calendar of events.  These events allow members the opportunity to network, develop lifelong friendships and share valuable information.

A major benefit of membership includes access to information and reimbursements for professional exams.  The Actuarial Club understands that paying for actuarial exams can pose a heavy burden on students.  To aid its members with these expenses, The Actuarial Club has set up the Exam Fee Reimbursement Program.  Upon passing an actuarial exam, active members will be reimbursed for the registration fee amount.  For information about the club contact sjuactuarialclub@gmail.com or Kathy Sabella at sabellak@stjohns.edu or (212) 277-5110.
