You expect college to present new challenges. Our Honors Program
will exceed your highest expectations.
As a special feature of the program, Honors faculty
encourage students to take an active role in
organizing an extracurricular activity or event. The project is
part of the Honors Portfolio.
You will be free to tailor the activity to your individual
interests. At the same time, your efforts will appeal to peers who
share your academic interests. These opportunities include the
following activities:

Honors Program Newsletter
Twice a semester, the Honors Program issues a Newsletter that
reports on events in the program. The Newsletter offers Honors
students an opportunity to publicize their achievements and write
about their interests - including the publication of creative
work.
Honors Program Faculty Forum
Faculty members from across the curriculum are invited by students
to take part in a topical panel discussion. Students learn more
about their professors' areas of expertise in an informal,
interdisciplinary setting that promotes lively discussions.
Lecture Series
Each semester some of the finest scholars from the New York
City area and beyond are invited to St. John's to address Honors
students and to engage them in intellectual discussion. The Honors
Lecture Series Committee, which comprises Honors students and a
faculty advisor, chooses the theme for each semester's program.
Social Gatherings
The Honors Program is a community of students. So, along
with student/faculty luncheons, barbecues and softball games, there
are various gatherings of students and faculty throughout the
academic year.
Book Discussion
Every semester, Honors students assist a faculty member in leading
a book discussion. The informal discussions take place in the
Honors Commons. At the start of each semester, students submit
proposals for discussion topics.
Alumni Events
Honors graduates are a close-knit group whose relationships
extend well beyond St. John's campus gates. Special events
exclusively for the program's alumni and alumnae take place during
the year. In addition, Honors alumni and alumnae are successful
professionals who can provide superb networking opportunities for
recent Honors graduates pursuing further study or embarking upon
new careers.
Film Series
Every semester a series of three films with a common theme are
shown in the evenings, followed by dinner and a student-led
discussion.
Museum Series
In addition to a yearly Honors trip to the Cloisters in the fall,
and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the spring, trips to museums
in and around the New York City area are organized by students and
accompanied by a faculty mentor. Particular attention will be given
to special exhibits occurring at any given time.
Drama Series
Welcome to the nation's leading Theater District! Students with a
penchant for theater are encouraged to organize Honors groups to
attend current plays, on- and off-Broadway. Special student
discounts are available.
Music/Dance Series
Students organize trips to area cultural events, including ballet,
opera and musical concerts -- both classical and/or contemporary.
Again, special student discounts are available.
Ethnic New York
Twice a semester, Honors students arrange trips to one of
New York's many ethnic neighborhoods, capped off by dinner at a
local restaurant. We encourage students to organize trips to
neighborhoods that reflect their cultural heritage.
