A world class education. Study abroad opportunities. Service
learning. Metropolitan campuses. These are the benefits that
await you at St. John’s University. Now these benefits are
available even sooner. The "Freshman Passport" is an
innovative study abroad program that will provide a select group of
freshmen with the opportunity to live in, study at and explore our
Rome, Italy campus during a two-week summer session or two-week
winter intersession.
You can choose from two Freshman Passport programs. Both
are based at our Rome Campus, but also include field trips of
Florence and other nearby cities.
1. Summer 2009: From August 1 through August
13, 2009, the faculty of the Freshman Passport program will lead a
comparative exploration of two great cities: Rome and New York.
While in Italy, our faculty will lay the academic foundation for a
special "comparative cities" section of our required DNY 1000C:
Discover New York core class, examining the artistic and cultural
life of the world’s "Eternal City." The class will continue
throughout the fall semester.
2. Winter 2010: From January 2 through January
14, 2010, students will complete ENG 1000C: English Composition, a
core course that will take place throughout the fall semester at
our Queens or Staten Island campus and finish at our Rome campus.
Through guided exercises and reflection, students will become
better writers by exploring themes that bridge both cultures,
enriching their academic skills while expanding their personal
horizons.
Through academic study, guided tours and community service, the
Freshman Passport program will help you become a metropolitan
citizen – a citizen not just of our New York City campuses, but of
the world.
The cost of the Freshman Passport program—for either the summer
or the winter session—is $1,550 and includes many meals, bus trips
and accommodations on our Rome, Italy campus. After
participating in our Freshman Passport program as a
freshman, you will be encouraged to participate in one of our
semester-long Global Studies programs as a sophomore or junior and
will be looked upon to serve as an "Global Ambassador," promoting
and encouraging study abroad for undergraduates. Please note that
enrollment in this program is limited to 75 freshmen.
Therefore, you must submit a completed Freshman Passport
application by June 30, 2009.
Please know that the Freshman Passport program
is a select group of highly talented freshmen who we feel will
truly excel in the academic and cultural environment at our Rome,
Italy campus. We at St. John’s are excited about the world-class
education we provide and are just as excited to invite about
you being a part of our inaugural Freshman Passport program.
Since you may still have a number of questions regarding our
Freshmen Passport, I have enclosed a series of frequently
asked questions which I hope you find helpful.
