Thank you for your interest in the Bachelor of Science Degree
Program in Actuarial Science at St. John's University.
Our program in actuarial science is one of the oldest and
best-known in the New York region. We invite you to learn more
about the opportunities that await you through this exciting
program.
A Vital Profession
Actuaries work within insurance companies, government agencies,
pension planning organizations, banking and investment firms and
consulting practices:
- They help set the price of coverages -- and those prices
determine whether a company will enjoy a healthy profit or will
experience a loss.
- They put a price tag on future risks.
- They might calculate how much a company would charge to insure
a new type of car.
- They might calculate how much damage an earthquake or hurricane
could cause.
- They combine analytical and business skills to solve all types
of financial and social problems involving economic risk.
- They have been called "financial architects" and "social
mathematicians."
Valued in Many Industries
Besides insurance, actuaries work in many other fields. That's
because their skills are readily transferable to any business that
deals with risk. An actuary could work in finance, marketing,
manufacturing, publishing and new product developments in sports,
entertainment, even the circus.
