Picture Yourself in The City
St. John’s is as much apart of New York City as the City is as
much apart of St. John’s. Originally founded in Brooklyn in 1870,
the St. John’s Queens campus opened
up in the mid-1950’s on an old golf course that the University
purchased in 1930. When you tour the campus, you’ll notice the
rolling hills that are reminiscent of the land’s former days as a
golf course.
More importantly, though, when you visit St. John’s, you’ll be
pleasantly surprised with the campus setting you’ll find in both
Queens and Staten Island. Nestled in the
middle of the Jamaica Estates neighborhood, the Queens campus- or
the Heartbeat of St. John’s- is a 30 minute subway ride from
midtown Manhattan. The Staten Island campus, which opened in the
late 1960’s, offers access to the City via the Staten Island Ferry,
while parts of campus have a view of the New York Harbor and the
Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Despite being right in New York, St.
John’s provides students with a traditional campus setting, with
the easy access to the world’s greatest city.
The University’s proximity to New York City is an instant draw
for students from all over the world. The 30 minute subway ride
from the Queens campus or on the Ferry from Staten Island give St.
John’s student’s access to the City for weekend trips, class trips,
and even when the men’s basketball team plays at the World Most
Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden. Your freshman Discover New York class
will help familiarize you with all of the City’s landmarks, while
also giving you a historical perspective of the City that even our
students from the five boroughs learn something new. And as an
upperclassman, maybe you’ll be heading into the City for that
internship you worked so hard to obtain.
