Induction into the
Heritage Circle
of
Nat Calamis
Nat Calamis received his B.S. in Communications from St.
Vincent’s College of St. John’s University in 1972. In 1974 he
began what would become a nearly four decade career in the
insurance industry when he accepted a position as Account Executive
at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. Four years later he joined
Starkweather & Shepley Insurance Brokerage, Inc. as an Account
Executive in the Commercial Lines Division and has remained with
the firm ever since, rising to his current position of President
and Chief Executive Officer. Recognizing the value of giving back
to his community, he was instrumental in forming the Starkweather
& Shepley Charitable Foundation and serves as Co-Chairperson of
the Right Charitable Foundation and a member of the Board of
Trustees of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. In appreciation of his
commitment to the service of others, the Multiple Sclerosis Society
named him “Rhode Island Person of the Year” in 1989. He has
demonstrated his loyal support of St. John’s as Boston Region
Co-Chairperson of the University’s recent capital campaign, and is
a member of The Red White Club, The Loughlin Society and The
McCallen Society. A grateful University presented him with the
Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award in 2002, the Jack Kaiser
Baseball Advocate Award in 2003 and the Pietas Medal in 2007.
Tonight, in celebration of his distinguished insurance career, his
dedication to community service and in recognition of the 40th
anniversary of his graduation, St. John’s University is proud to
induct Nat Calamis into the Heritage Circle.
