The Perfect Assist: Red Storm Feeds the Hungry at West Coast Food Bank

When the Men’s Basketball team traveled to the West Coast on a recent road trip, they brought more than just their New York brand of basketball.

They brought their Vincentian spirit, gladly picking up spoons and spatulas to lend a helping hand at the San Francisco Food Bank. It was a moving experience for Head Coach Steve Lavin and his student-athletes, allowing the Johnnies to address one of the most basic human needs in a very real way.

“For us, it’s not just about coming to school and playing basketball,” said Senior big man God’sgift Achiuwa. “To be part of this program and this institution is a privilege, and opportunities like this really show what St. John’s stands for: giving back to the community and helping people who are not able to help themselves.”

Achiuwa’s thoughts are not unique among St. John’s students and student-athletes. From their first days on campus, these young men and women learn that service to others is an integral part of the St. John’s experience, and they reflect on the impact they make in the community. After all, this is what sets the University apart from others and what transforms inspired students into committed graduates who embrace the spirit of service for the rest of their lives.

And for the Men’s Basketball team, serving those in need 2,500 miles away is without question the most meaningful victory of all.

You can provide opportunities for our students by making a gift to St. John’s today. Your generosity will allow you to partner with our students as they carry their commitment to helping others into their personal and professional communities for the rest of their lives.
