St. John’s University recently welcomed a new member to the
Board of Trustees and four new members to the Board of
Governors.
Joseph M. Mattone, Sr., Esq. ‘53C, ‘55L, ‘94HON was elected to
membership on the Board of Trustees, the body that has
responsibility for the overall governance of the University. He is
Chairman and CEO of Mattone Group Company, LLC and is also a
partner in a private legal practice. Mattone is a member of The
Founders Society, the donor recognition group exclusively for St.
John’s most generous supporters, and a member of the Board of
Directors of St. John’s School of Law. Formerly a member of St.
John’s Board of Governors, he was awarded the President’s Medal in
1985, the Medal of Honor in 1993, was inducted into the Heritage
Circle in 2003 and received the Spirit of Service Award in 2004. In
1994 a grateful University conferred upon him the degree of Doctor
of Laws, honoris causa.
The new members of the Board of Governors are Paul M. Carroll
’69CBA, ’71MBA, ‘79APC; Neil Gabriele; Robert F. Kalenka ’84CBA,
’91MBA and Lewis Rice, Jr. ’74SVC. The Board of Governors advises
the Board of Trustees and the University President on strategic
issues relating to St. John’s.
Paul M. Carroll is a triple alumnus who earned his B.S. in
Economics in 1969, his M.B.A. in Economics in 1971 and his Advanced
Professional Certificate in Accounting in 1979, all from St. John’s
College of Business Administration, now the Peter J. Tobin College
of Business. Carroll has held positions as Senior Vice President at
The Dime Savings Bank of New York, Senior Vice President and Vice
President at Chase Manhattan Bank and First Chicago National Bank
and Senior Vice President at Anchor Savings Bank/WAMU Bank, the
position from which he retired. In February, he and his wife Jeanne
were presented with the Fidelitas Award for their lifetime of
devotion to each other and to St. John’s at the Blessing of the
Couples Mass in St. Thomas More Church. He is a long-time member of
The Loughlin Society.
Neil Gabriele is a Managing Director at Bluff Point Associates.
Prior to joining Bluff Point, Gabriele was a management consultant
for PricewaterhouseCoopers in their financial services practice. He
previously worked for Optech Systems (now part of Matrix Financial
Solutions) in an operating role and also for Fidelity Investments
in several capacities, including as a systems analyst and trader.
He earned a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Richmond
in 1994 and an M.B.A. in Electronic Commerce at Vanderbilt
University in 2000.
Robert F. Kalenka, a double alumnus, received his B.S. in
Accounting in 1984 and his M.B.A. in Finance in 1991, both from St.
John’s College of Business Administration, now the Peter J. Tobin
College of Business. He then began a successful career in business
at a number of prestigious firms and currently serves as Chief
Operating Officer at Broadridge Financial Solutions, Inc. He has
consistently demonstrated his devotion to St. John’s through
membership in The Loughlin Society, support of The Father Dorr Golf
Classic and participation on the Tobin College of Business Advisory
Board. He received the Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award in
2009.
Lewis Rice, Jr. received his B.S. in Criminal Justice from St.
Vincent’s College, now St. John’s College of Professional Studies,
in 1974. He became a Special Agent in the United States Drug
Enforcement Administration, remaining with the DEA until he retired
in January 2001 as Special Agent-in-Charge of the New York Field
Office. He then joined senior management in the private sector and
currently serves as Vice President for Global Security and
Trademark Protection at Estee Lauder Companies, Inc. In 2009, St.
John’s recognized his service to the community by honoring him with
the Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award.
