Women’s Basketball Reaches New Heights

It’s been a record-setting season for Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico and the Women’s Basketball team.

Now in her 10th year at St. John’s University, Barnes Arico recently became the all-time winningest coach in the history of the Women’s Basketball Program. In addition, she led the Johnnies to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship for the first time since 1988, catapulting the Red Storm to a No. 13 Associated Press ranking, the highest in program history. For her outstanding effort on the sideline, Barnes Arico received BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors for the second time.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg. Da’Shena Stevens ’12TCB was named American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also earned the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. Four players were named to All-BIG EAST teams.

Additionally, the Red Storm posted one of the most impressive college upsets in recent memory: a last-second 57-56 road win against the then-No. 2 University of Connecticut Huskies, snapping UConn’s unbelievable 99-game home win streak.

With the squad now playing at an incredibly high level – and with only two seniors on its roster (Stevens and Tesia Harris ’12C) – the team looks poised to remain strong for years down the line.
