St. John’s University President
Welcomes Loughlin Society Alumni to Reunion 2007
St. John’s University President Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M.
hosted a special reception for members of the Loughlin Society
celebrating the anniversary of their graduation in years ending in
“2” or “7” as part of the University’s Alumni Reunion 2007
festivities.
Alumni and their families gathered in Marillac Terrace to renew
friendships and share memories with former students and faculty who
were an important part of their days on campus. Many guests
commented on how different the campus looks today from what it did
when they were students. They noted the many new buildings
already in place and the ongoing construction which suggests
additional enhancements in the future.
According to Thea Graves Pellman ’57CBA, “My husband and I met here
and we both have very special feelings for St. John’s. Within
our family we have seven St. John’s degrees, and we all enjoy the
opportunity to give back – and come back – whenever we can.
We’re happy that our Loughlin Society gifts go to support student
scholarships, because that’s really what has always made St. John’s
so special.”
Loughlin Society Co-Chairperson Joseph O’Connor ’82CBA voiced
similar sentiments. “My feeling is one of utter pride.
I see so many successful people and so many happy people and I know
that, more than anything, the Vincentian mission is alive and
well. St. John’s continues to educate the sons and daughters
of immigrants and when I look around the room I see that the faces
may have changed but the mission is still the same.”
President Harrington expressed his appreciation for everything that
the Loughlin Society has done on behalf of the more than 20,000
students who are currently enrolled at the University. “Today
is all about a chance for me to say ‘thank you’ to each of you,
because we couldn’t have accomplished what we have without you,”
noted Father Harrington. “As Loughlin Society members, your
support and commitment provides St. John’s with the means to make a
real difference for our students, who in turn go forth to make a
real difference in our world.”
