Ways to Volunteer

Mentoring Students

Alumni may directly mentor students by participating in a number of programs, including:

  • Alumni Insider’s View… Programs enable St. John’s University students to obtain real-world knowledge about a chosen profession and/or field while drawing upon the professional experiences of some of our most successful alumni.  By serving as panelists, speakers and moderators, alumni provide students with keen insights based upon years of experience within their individual professions and careers.

Alumni Insider’s View Programs include:

U.S. Capital – a three-day program in Washington, DC to learn firsthand the federal government and private sectors

New York State Capital – a full-day program at the New York State Capital to learn firsthand the state government and private sectors

New Alumni Insider’s View programs are planned each academic year and we welcome your input on their development.

  • S.H.A.R.E. (Students Having A Real Experience) Program offers alumni an opportunity to work with the University’s Career Center by hosting a student at your workplace.  Individual students spend a day shadowing you as you practice your profession, both locally and regionally, and gain firsthand information about the specifics of your particular career.  This is a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience within a workplace setting.
  • The Learning Communities Program is a new initiative at St. John’s that unites resident and commuter students with professors who share the same academic interest.  National statistics show that students involved in living-learning programs have greater satisfaction with their college experience, are more academically engaged and involved on campus and achieve higher grades. You may participate in this program by inviting the members of a particular Learning Community to visit you as a group at your place of employment to experience the realities of your profession as a future career choice.
  • Speaking Directly to Groups of Students provides alumni with the opportunity to share their experiences with groups of interested students.  You may serve as a guest lecturer within a traditional on-campus classroom setting or participate as a panelist as part of one of the Alumni Insider’s View…Programs indicated above.
  • Recruiting Students and Other Alumni for Employment is a mutually beneficial initiative. It offers alumni employers access to a pool of talented and highly motivated potential employees who share the unique St. John’s values and work ethic while at the same time extending job opportunities to students and other alumni who are looking to either change or embark upon their career pathway to success.
