The event raised more than $19,500 for the Sipp/DeStefano
Scholarship Fund. The scholarship benefits worthy and qualified
students attending St. John’s Staten Island campus and attendees
delighted in coupling a day on the links with assisting
students. Since its inception, the Sipp/DeStefano Scholarship
Fund has awarded more than $123,000 to 68 students. Scholarship
grants have ranged from a minimum of $750 to a maximum of $6,000
per student. In the 2007- 2008 academic year, seven students
received a total of $21,600.
Following the time spent on the green, golfers convened for
cocktail hour followed by dinner where four members of the St.
John’s community were honored for their generosity and dedication
to the Vincentian mission. The honorees were Patricia Bean ’80CBA,
’88MBA, retired Director of Marketing and Estimating, The Sweet
Construction Group; Larry Arann, Ph.D.; David Lehr, Esq.
’68Ed, ’72L, Attorney at Law; and Dennis McKeon, Executive
Director, Where to Turn, Inc. The honorees each shared their
connection with the university and the motivation behind their
commitment to making the outing a tremendous success. Mark
Irving, a friend of the University, said “Today was an enjoyable
way for members of the Staten Island community to support
higher-education. Sports and athletics are truly the character
building aspects of education.”
