A Day of Service
October 01, 2008
A gray and rainy day didn’t prevent a team of loyal St. John’s
University alumni from participating in the Seventh Annual
University Service Day on Saturday, September 27,
2008.

Team members met at St. John’s for breakfast, with more than
1,000 other volunteers University-wide. Volunteers
participated in a prayer service led by Rev. Patrick Griffin, C.M.,
Executive Vice President for Mission and Branch Campuses, before
dividing into 92 teams and traveling to their respective work
sites.
The alumni group, boasting t-shirts with the slogan “What a
Difference a Day Makes” and St. John’s branded hats made their way
to the United Hindu Cultural Council Senior Center in South Ozone
Park, NY to help paint, trim hedges and clean several rooms in the
center.
The day proved to be both rewarding and fun for alumni
volunteers who enjoyed meeting one another and serving the
community in true Vincentian spirit. “It was great to get the
alumni involved with the rest of the University community on such
an important day,” said Melissa Kuch '03CPS.
Participants, who worked alongside one another, were also
pleased to have formed new friendships. “I really enjoyed the
enthusiasm of the alumni team and liked meeting other alumni that I
had never met before,” shared Rashida Bradley '05GEd.
Each year the University organizes teams of students, alumni,
faculty and staff to assist local organizations in the
neighborhoods around our campuses.
