Women’s Basketball Excels in BIG EAST

March 05, 2012

It’s been a record-setting season for Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico and the Women’s Basketball team, capped off by a tremendous showing at the BIG EAST Championship.

After a dramatic overtime victory over Louisville to reach the BIG EAST semifinals, the Associated Press ranked the Red Storm No. 13 – the highest ever in program history. Additionally, Barnes Arico earned BIG EAST Coach of the Year honors for the second time in her career, while senior Da’Shena Stevens was named American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Now in her 10th year at the helm, Barnes Arico has steered the Johnnies to its third-straight 20-win season and, along the way, became the all-time winningest coach in St. John’s Women’s Basketball history.

She also helped orchestrate one of the most thrilling upsets in college basketball history: a last-second road win over the then-No. 2 University of Connecticut Huskies, ending UConn’s 99-game home win streak.

The Red Storm now hopes to make a run in the upcoming Women’s NCAA Tournament. The field and brackets will be announced on Monday, March 12.
