Remembering Lewis Avenue

April 30, 2007

It was a day of celebration and remembrance when the Queens campus served as the site for the 49th Annual Lewis Avenue Reunion on April 21. Joined by family and friends, alumni of the beloved Brooklyn campus came together to reminisce about their days as students.

The festivities included a mass held at St. Thomas More Church followed by dinner at Council Hall. Members of the Mixed Chorus also lent to the atmosphere during dinner with a few musical selections. Jack Curran ’52C, head coach for Archbishop Molloy High School baseball and basketball teams, was presented with the Legacy Award for his contributions to the community.

Those gathered, like Theresa Maloney-Reddy ’51Ed, longed for the family-like environment at Lewis Avenue. “I was a cheerleader and I loved seeing everyone come together to watch the basketball games in DeGray Hall, the gymnasium,” she recalled. Even though the Lewis Avenue campus no longer exists, many of the alumni still hold it close to their hearts. “We had a good faculty, wonderful students and we had a lot of fun,” said Don Zimmer ’49C, ’52L. “I’ve made friends here at St. John’s who have remained friends of mine for all of my life.”
