Crime Prevention Programs

Crime Prevention Programs on personal safety and theft prevention are sponsored by various campus organizations throughout the year. Public Safety personnel facilitate programs for students, parents, faculty, residents and Resident  Advisers providing a variety of educational strategies and tips on how to protect themselves. Starting fall 2009 members of the Department of Public Safety speaks at various resident life meetings covering the following topics: security awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on training.

St. John's University provides information about crime prevention programs during orientation to both incoming students and parents and on the web site.  Public Safety officers engage in routine, motorized and foot patrol on the Queens and Staten Island campuses on a 24-hour basis.. The Department of Public Safety maintains frequent contact with the local police departments.  The Queens and Staten Island campus have over 100 Residence Safety Monitors, trained students leaders who help to maintain safety on campus.  There are 3 public safety officers at each residence entrance 24 hours a day.  The Queens and Staten Island campuses also have cameras mounted around campus on a 24 hour basis.

In the event that a situation arises, either on or off campus, a campus wide Public Safety Advisory may be issued.  The warning will be issued through the University's e-mail system to students, faculty, and staff, and it will be posted on St. John's Central.

All faculty and staff are given the St. John's University Emergency Preparedness Information booklet as part of their paycheck to insure compliance.
