Residence Life

At St. John's University's Queens campus, you can enjoy living in some of the newest and most modern student residence halls on the East Coast. Of course, you also will enjoy being part of the friendly campus community that is St. John's.

Our modern, vibrant Residence Village is located on the south-east corner of our 105-acre Queens campus. Grouped around grassy quadrangles, these six residence halls are far more than just a place to sleep, eat and study. They are places to be close to the action of a BIG EAST University, both inside and outside the classroom!

As a resident student, you will enjoy many opportunities to grow through our varied educational, social and service programs. Many of these are developed by our trained Resident Assistants (RA), Residence Directors (RD), Hall Councils, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Campus Ministers. Those programs are created using our philosophy and intended learning outcomes. The RAs, RDs, and Campus Ministers are also here to serve as sounding boards when students need someone to talk to.

The financial and geographical resources that we offer also are second to none. For example, each Hall Council receives funds to provide free or discounted tickets to major NYC events, such as Yankee games, museums and broadway shows.

A unique feature of our new halls is the way all residents have a bathroom directly connected to their room or suite. Instead of competing with thirty or forty students for a shower, you only have to work with eight or nine. Residents also find their rooms equipped with multiple data ports, that provide access to phones, cable TV and the internet. Don't worry about having to compete with roommates for the internet: as we like to say, we have "a computer port for every pillow."

Suites also include their own fully tiled bathrooms and large windows overlooking beautifully landscaped grounds. Residents even control their own heating and air-conditioning!

Each student is provided a bed, mattress and desk. Students will also have a phone line and their own password protected voicemail. Off-campus phone calls can be made using a calling card. It should also be noted that first and second year residential students will not be allowed to bring cars on campus.

A Place to Call Home
Our great campus-life experience reaches far beyond our individual residence halls.  St. John's offers a number of great dining options. The most popular place to dine is Montigoris Dining Hall, also known as our "Residence Dining Hall." This strikingly modern, two-story facility features "all-you-can-eat" specialties, including a grill, pasta, Asian dishes, salads, sandwiches and a seperate main entree.

With such great food, you'll be glad to know about our many opportunities to tone up. We offer a state-of-the-art Fitness Center -- with free weights, exercise machines, treadmills, etc. -- right here on campus. Students also enjoy our many intramural and club teams offered by the Department of Recreational Sports.

Residing on campus also gives students easy access to our libraries, study groups, 150 student organizations, and of course the pleasure of watching our athletic teams compete in the BIG EAST.

The safety and security of our residential students is of the utmost importance. A security desk is located in the lobby of each residence hall. The desk is staffed 24 hours a day to make sure we always know who is in the building. (See specific Policies and Procedures in our Residence Life Handbook to learn about our guest policies.)

In addition, every room is equipped with state-of-the art life protection systems, including fire sprinklers throughout each residence hall. St. John's also has its own University security force that is always visible around campus and in direct contact with the FDNY and NYPD. Students feel safe everywhere on our campus, which also has emergency call boxes posted throughout.

We hope this introduction has given you a better appreciation of what living on campus can bring to your educational experience.
