Servant Leadership is a leadership certification program
committed to developing future leaders who practice the servant
leadership philosophy with an emphasis on community service.
Participants are given the opportunity to develop leadership skills
through exciting and innovative leadership sessions, hands-on
modeling of leadership practices and participation in community and
University service projects locally, nationally and
internationally.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Community Service
As part of the Vincentian mission of St. John’s University, a
component would be to participate in 30 hours of
direct community service throughout the
academic year (15 hours per semester). You can choose any
type of community service that is previously approved by the
Coordinator of Leadership Development & Service. You must
submit the “Individual Service Verification Form” for each service
project you participate in to Maggie Bach in D’Angelo 124-4.
Fall Semester
Introduction to Servant Leadership I
Workshop
This workshop program will facilitate students to define what
leadership is and to understand the concept of a Servant
Leader. Students will begin to examine their own beliefs
about leaders, leadership and themselves. Necessary skills
will be examined and practiced.

Servant Leadership Retreat
Get to know your fellow Servant Leaders, while immersed in a 1-day
retreat. This retreat will not only address leadership skills
and models of Servant Leadership, but also include direct community

You will earn 5 hours of service.
Spring Semester
The Individual as a Servant Leader
This workshop will
enable students to gain an understanding of leadership and how as
leaders they can develop their own personal mission and vision
statement in the context of Servant Leadership. Current research on
leadership trends will be introduced and discussed and participants
will become familiar with a variety of leadership theories.

Servant Leadership Service Experience
Students will participate in a 1-day service experience. This
experience will allow students to put their knowledge of Servant
Leadership to practice in direct service. The day will
conclude with a group reflection to discuss not only the service,
but also the experience of applying Servant Leadership during a
