Prayer, Film, Discussion — Students Invited to Celebrate Founder’s Week

September 20, 2012

Students can enrich their spiritual and academic life by taking part in the varied activities St. John’s has planned for Founder’s Week 2012.  Through prayer, films and discussions, you can join Campus Ministry and the entire University community in celebrating our Vincentian Heritage and spirit.

Sunday Night Student Mass
Sunday, 5:30 p.m., September 23
St. Thomas More Church
Begin Founder’s Week with prayer and the Eucharist. Gathering together as a community, we will reflect on the many ways we can be “Faith-Filled Citizens” this week and always.

Vespers for Founder’s Week

Monday, 7:30 p.m., September 24
St. Thomas More Church
Taken from the Latin, the Church’s sunset prayer service also is referred to as “Evening Prayer” or “Evensong.” In honor of Founder’s Week, Campus Ministry will hold a special service focusing on the plight of the poor and marginalized in our world — and the call for us to devote our lives to their well-being in the tradition of St. Vincent de Paul.

The Way
Tuesday, 5 – 8 p.m., September 25
D’Angelo Center Room 416
Campus Ministry and St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will screen and discuss The Way. Starring Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen, this critically acclaimed film follows a grieving father on the 1,000-year-old Catholic pilgrimage route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia, Spain. Carmen Khloe, Associate Professor of Languages and Literatures, will lead the discussion. Dinner and refreshments will be served. Please RSVP by Tuesday, September 21: call Campus Ministry at (718) 990-6255.

Founder’s Week Feast Day Mass
Thursday, 12:15 p.m., September 27
St. Thomas More Church
As we gather for this special Mass, we consider the challenge to enter this “political season” as persons of faith. Following the example of St. Vincent de Paul, we seek the common good for all—especially those living in poverty or under oppression. Join us as we pray for the wisdom to strengthen our efforts to be Vincentian, faith-filled citizens.

Join us for our full schedule of Founder’s Week activities. For more information, contact the Office of Campus Ministry at (718) 990-6255.
