History of Harlem

This presentation will take you on a journey through the history of
one of the largest neighborhoods in New York City. Professor Jim
Weiss will begin the History of Harlem with the settlement of the
Dutch and move through the Great Migration of African Americans and
discuss in detail the outstanding period of culture and arts known
as the Harlem Renaissance. Harlem is the home to over 400 churches
and major world religions. Sounds of the community will be
highlighted including the Harlem Boys Choir! Other topics that will
be discussed include the formation of The Harlem Opera House, The
Cotton Club, and the famous Apollo Theatre.
Dr. James Weiss holds graduate degrees from Fordham, Long Island
and St. John's Universities. An assistant principal in New York
City schools for 24 years, he has published two books, several
short stories about growing up in Brooklyn, NY and a short
anthology of poems. Currently, he is a professor of both Speech and
Discover New York on St. John's University Staten Island?s
campus.
