Workshop Helps Practitioners to Address Hurricane-Related Trauma

You’re invited to attend “Child Victims of Hurricane Sandy: Post-Disaster Mental Health,” a free workshop by Elissa Brown, Ph.D., St. John’s University Professor of Psychology, Executive Director of the Child HELP Partnership and one of three psychologists who developed the 9/11 Child and Family Recovery Program.*

The workshop will include:

  • Mental health reactions to natural disasters from early to late childhood                             
  • Risk factors for post-trauma mental health problems                                   
  • Appropriate interventions: short-term and long-term
  • Opportunities for intervention training and additional resources


This workshop is open to child-centric caregivers, including clergy, educators, pediatricians, librarians, mental health professionals and other service providers. Please feel free to forward this to others who may be interested in attending.

*For the 9/11 Child and Family Recovery Program, Dr. Brown:

  • Oversaw trauma-specific mental health services (assessments and therapy to children, education to leadership) delivered in schools south of Canal Street
  • Advised NYC Department of Education
  • Oversaw trauma/bereavement-specific mental health services for children of the firefighters, port authority workers, EMS and police who died in the line of duty
