Alexander Hamilton vs. Thomas Jefferson
and Their "Duel” Over the Future of New York City
Ralph Porzio
New Yorkers recall that in the spring of 1804, Alexander
Hamilton lost his life in a duel with his political enemy, Aaron
Burr. Most New Yorkers do not realize that in 1790, Alexander
Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson engaged in an intense negotiation of
an economic bail-out of New York in exchange for Washington D.C.
becoming our nation’s capital. This lecture will focus on the
ingenuity and “duels” of the great New Yorker, Alexander Hamilton,
in saving New York City from financial collapse.
Professor Ralph Porzio is a full time Legal Studies Professor at
St. John’s University. He is a former New York State Family
Court Judge and Richmond County Assistant District Attorney.
Professor Porzio is also an attorney with a private law
practice. He received his B.S. summa cum laude in Finance
from St. John’s University in 1980, and his J.D. from St. John’s in
1984.
